In these 4 decades, it has gone from black-and-white wireframe graphics on 6 by 6 tiles to the cloud-powered ultra-immersive graphical marvel that it is today. The idea to build a flight simulator gained traction after the publication of a set of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.dtic.mil\/sti\/pdfs\/ADA027419.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">articles on flight simulation using 3-D graphics in 1976<\/a>. These articles were authored by Bruce Artwick, who later partnered with Stu Moment to create Sublogic: the company that would ultimately develop the FS1 flight simulator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FS1 ran on machines with 16 KiB of memory and was \u2018capable of drawing 150 lines per second. It took only 3-5 inputs a second and simulated a slightly modernized version of the British WW1 biplane fighter aircraft, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sopwith_Camel\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sopwith Camel<\/a>. The display was basic at best and would undergo further adjustments in order to successfully port the game to the much more limited TRS-80. In this regard, the instrument panel was slashed and the resolution of the cockpit window display was reduced significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FS1 Flight Simulator - the Ancestor of MS Flight Sim 2020\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e6TlkAkwv5U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The game was a huge success. It was touted as the \u2018most impressive computer game\u2019 (rings a bell?) and sold over 30,000 copies by June 1982.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"enter-microsoft\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enter_Microsoft\"><\/span>Enter Microsoft<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1981, Microsoft approached Artwick for an improved version of the game for the upcoming&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBM_Personal_Computer\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">16-bit IBM PC<\/a>. With the game, Microsoft wanted to graphically demonstrate the performance difference between 8 and 16-bit computers. The deal materialized in 1982 with Sublogic licensing Microsoft a version of the game for the IBM PC. The company named it Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.0 and the series was officially born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game simulated a Cessna 182, and allowed users to fly in one of the four US regions of Chicago, New York, Seattle, and Los Angles. The game featured improved and colored graphics, variable weather, and the time of the day. Perhaps, the most entertaining feature of the new game was the \u2018Europe 1917\u2019 mode based on FS1 Flight Simulator\u2019s \u2018British mode\u2019. The mode enabled users to fly a Sopwith Camel war plane into a grid-divided region surrounded by mountains. There they could attack enemy planes and declare war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.0 (GamePlay video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/27szyA9mZ8Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft marketed the program aggressively with the ads going as far as, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/15-classic-tech-ads\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">If flying your IBM PC got any more realistic, you\u2019d need a license<\/a>\u2019. Sounds rather comical today, but back then it was the real deal. The game sold over 800,000 in its first 5 years and was raved by the critics.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/Electronic_Fun_with_Computer_Games_Vol_01_No_12_1983-10_Fun_Games_Publishing_US\/page\/n3\/mode\/2up\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Electronic Fun with Computers &amp; Games\u2019 Hartley G. Lesser wrote, \u201cMicrosoft\u2019s Flight Simulator actually turns your IBM PC into a Cessna. The thrill of flying becomes a reality.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 2 years later, Microsoft came up with Flight Simulator 2.0 featuring minor graphical and accuracy improvements. The scenery was expanded to cover the entire US although the airports remained unchanged. Inarguably, the biggest improvement was the ability to use a joystick or mouse for controlling the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, Sublogic went about its business, porting the game to Apple II in 1983, the Commodore 64, MSX, and Atari 800 in 1984, and Macintosh and Amiga and Atari ST in 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-rise-and-rise-of-microsoft-flight-simulator\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Rise_and_Rise_of_Microsoft_Flight_Simulator\"><\/span>The Rise and Rise of Microsoft Flight Simulator<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft Flight Simulator 3.0 came out in 1988 and marked the commercial maturity of the idea. Featuring newer ports and planes, higher refresh rates, and better and customizable graphics, Microsoft\u2019s Flight Simulator 3.0 had simmers jumping out of their seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Microsoft Flight Simulator 3.0 gameplay (PC Game, 1988)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JhTM1dYu7HA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year, Microsoft launched Flight Simulator 4.0. Amongst other features, the game featured improved aircraft models, dynamic scenery, random weather patterns, and the ability to adjust flight characteristics and create experimental aircraft. Remarkably, though, the packing remained unchanged, with Microsoft swapping out 3.0\u2019s scenery with another. Well, that\u2019s what happens when you dole out versions year in, year out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft seemed to have learned its lessons because Flight Simulator 5.0 wasn\u2019t released until 4 years later. The much-anticipated version of the game ramped up realism by introducing textures, sound effects, artificial intelligence, and custom cockpits. This resulted in better graphics, more accurate flight models, and a more immersive experience overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, in 1995, Flight Simulator 5.1 became the first game in the series to be released on CD-ROM. It was also the first version to feature satellite imagery and improved upon its predecessor with better weather effects and faster performance. The same year, Microsoft ported a similar, albeit faster, version to its newly launched operating system, Windows 95.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.1 for MS-Dos From 1995\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jKOsXWvcZBA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"leveraging-the-power-of-gpus\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leveraging_the_power_of_GPUs\"><\/span>Leveraging the power of GPUs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Flight Simulator 98 was the first game in the series to take advantage of 3-D graphic cards via DirectX. The 3-D environment brought about improved performance, better-modeled airplanes, and distinct sounds for each type of aircraft. It also featured a helicopter, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bell_206\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Bell 206B III JetRanger<\/a>, and an expanded in-box scenery with 45 detailed cities and as many as 3000 airports. The flight sim was a huge success and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/flight-sim-stats\/1100-2468134\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">shipped over a million copies within 2 months of its release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, Microsoft came up with the Flight Simulator 2000 featuring major upgrades. For starters, it had better visual fidelity, improving upon the detailing of its predecessor. In this regard, rain and snow were incorporated for the first time. The game also introduced new aircraft and airports. Boeing 777 and Supersonic Concorde were added alongside 17,000 new airports. With such exciting additions, it\u2019s not far off to think the game would have garnered a positive response. Well, not exactly! While the graphics were praised, most people were disappointed that the game demanded high-end hardware. You needed a Pentium 166 MHz to run the game and a 400-500 MHz computer for bearable framerates. What didn\u2019t help was that even with high-end hardware, the game stuttered in graphically dense areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next major release in the game series was Flight Simulator 2002 which was released shortly after the 9\/11 attacks. As expected, the game outperformed all previous versions. It marked a significant improvement in graphics and was much smoother than its predecessor. The sim also incorporated Air Traffic control and artificially-intelligent aircraft to fly alongside the computer-controlled planes. The game garnered appraise from critics and the public alike, winning PC Gamer US\u2019s \u2018Best Simulation\u2019 and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/fifth-annual-aias-awards-announced\/1100-2852523\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Academy of Interactive Arts &amp; Sciences\u2019 &#8216;Computer Simulation Game of the Year\u2019<\/a>&nbsp;awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, Microsoft doled out&nbsp;<em>Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight<\/em>&nbsp;to commemorate the hundred years of the Wright brothers\u2019 first flight. The sim featured several historic aircraft like the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wright_Flyer\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Wright Flyer<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ford_Tri-Motor\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Ford Tri-Motor<\/a>, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_DC-3\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Douglas DC-3<\/a>. Amongst others, the most noticeable inclusions were a revamped weather system with localized weather and detailed air traffic control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 | Seattle - Los Angeles | Boeing 737-400\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lCaUZF1vz9E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"microsoft-flight-simulator-x-and-hiatus\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft_Flight_Simulator_X_and_Hiatus\"><\/span>Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Hiatus<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next iteration in Microsoft\u2019s Flight Simulator series was the Flight Simulator X. It was launched in 2006 in two editions: Standard and Deluxe. While the standard edition featured 18 aircraft, 28 detailed cities, and 24,000 airports, the Deluxe edition was shipped with an additional 6 planes and 10 cities. With higher resolution textures, the game visually outshone all previous versions, although the frame rate was at times sore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game received generally favorable reviews from critics and users. The enhanced multi-player support was particularly praised and quite fittingly. The game allowed users to be air traffic controllers as well as co-pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year, an expansion pack for Flight Simulator X was released. The expansion pack, titled&nbsp;<em>Flight Simulator X: Acceleration<\/em>, added new missions and aircraft to the game. It also included new features such as multiplayer air racing and was aimed at increasing the game\u2019s longevity. As time would have it, longevity was much needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Microsoft Flight Simulator X Gameplay [HD]\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qGh4zrBNyyk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2009, Microsoft shut down Aces Game Studio, the department responsible for developing the game. The game, however, still found its way to Steam in 2014 when Microsoft granted Dovetail Games the rights to port the game to Steam. Other than that, there were no major developments during this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"return-and-the-best-looking-game-ever%3F\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Return_and_the_Best-looking_Game_Ever\"><\/span>Return and the Best-looking Game Ever?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After an agonizing 13-year wait, Microsoft finally announced the latest iteration of its flight simulator series in 2019. The game hit the market in 2020 and took the world by storm. Featuring ultra-realistic scenery, real-time weather and traffic conditions, and sophisticated flight models, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 has been frequently described as the best-looking and most immersive game ever. Holding a 90% approval rating on Metacritic at the time of writing, the AAA title is also the highest-rated flight sim of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=M9344X1_PQQ\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft Flight Simulator was released in 3 editions: Standard, Deluxe, and Premium. These editions feature a variable number of aircraft and hand-crafted airports. The Standard edition has 20 highly-detailed aircraft and 30 hand-crafted airports. The Deluxe and Premium edition add another 5 and 10 aircraft and hand-crafted airports respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft Flight Simulator is the first flight sim to offer both VR and console support. It went&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simulatorhardware.com\/flight\/best-vr-headsets-for-microsoft-flight-simulator\/\">VR-compatible<\/a>&nbsp;in December 2020 at the culmination of an initial beta-testing phase. In July of the next year, the AAA title was successfully ported to Xbox X\/S consoles. The game eluded Xbox One for another 9 months before it was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simulatorhardware.com\/flight\/microsoft-flight-simulator-xbox-one-cloud-gaming\/\">made available via Xbox\u2019s Cloud Gaming Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From black-and-white wireframe graphics to bewitching scenery, Microsoft Flight Simulator has come a long way. It has sold over 21 million copies, contributed billions in hardware sales, and made our days bearable.
