Not in our rankings
Amazon itself isn't selling the Ryzen 7 9800X3D right now (only other sellers, on back-order), and the Ryzen 7 9850X3D that replaced it costs about the same, so we rank that instead. See the current processor rankings for MSFS 2024 and X-Plane 12.
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Desktop Processor vs AMD Ryzen 9 9950X Desktop Processor for MSFS: 3D V-Cache edges out the 16-core for sim workloads.
The 9800X3D scores 100/100 against the 9950X's 96/100 on our model-derived scale — a 4-point gap that reflects real-world sim threading behavior rather than raw core count. The 9800X3D's 3D V-Cache architecture keeps frame times tighter during dense photogrammetry approaches like EGLL or KLAX, where MSFS hammers the CPU with scenery streaming and AI traffic on short finals. The 9950X pulls ahead when your rig doubles as a streaming or encoding workstation alongside long online VATSIM sessions where its 16-core thread count absorbs background load the 9800X3D can't match.
Choose AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D if…
Choose AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Desktop Processor if your priority is consistent frame pacing through dense VR city flyovers and photogrammetry zones where 3D V-Cache's latency advantage directly tightens your sim loop.
Choose AMD Ryzen 9 9950X if…
Choose AMD Ryzen 9 9950X Desktop Processor if you run MSFS alongside heavy background tasks — streaming, AI co-pilot tools, or simultaneous recording — and need the extra cores to keep both workloads clean.
Our take
The 4-point score gap is marginal, but the 9800X3D wins on price-to-performance for pure MSFS use — unless you need the 9950X's core count for workloads running beside the sim, that mid-range premium buys you nothing in the cockpit.
