What matters in a gaming laptop for Microsoft Flight Simulator

In a laptop, three things decide how well MSFS runs, roughly in this order:

  • The graphics chip, and how much power the laptop feeds it. Every laptop here uses an NVIDIA RTX 50-series chip, from the RTX 5050 to the RTX 5090. A laptop chip runs at lower power than the desktop card with the same name, and the same chip can run slower in a thin laptop than in a thick one. Our graphics ratings come from independent 3DMark tests of the laptop chips, so they already show the laptop version, not the desktop card.
  • 12 GB or more of graphics memory. Microsoft's ideal spec asks for 12 GB. In published MSFS 2024 tests, 8 GB cards were fine at 1080p but fell behind from 1440p up. Only the RTX 5070 Ti, 5080 and 5090 laptops here have 12 GB or more; the RTX 5050, 5060 and 5070 laptops have 8 GB.
  • 32 GB of RAM. That's Microsoft's recommended amount; its ideal is 64 GB. Some laptops here arrive with 32 GB and some with 16 GB; one lists memory slots, one has its memory soldered to the board, and for the rest the listing doesn't say. The ranked list shows which.

The processor matters too: MSFS leans on it at busy airports. But no independent gaming test covers laptop processors, so we show each one as a class (HX3D, HX or H) and weight it lightly rather than invent a ranking. Microsoft's official requirements are below.

Gaming laptop or desktop PC for MSFS?

A desktop gives you more for the money, and a laptop gives you a screen, a keyboard and a PC you can move. For MSFS 2024 the gap shows in graphics memory: the laptop RTX 5070 has 8 GB where the desktop RTX 5070 has 12 GB, and the laptop RTX 5070 Ti has 12 GB where the desktop card has 16 GB. The laptop RTX 5080 matches its desktop card at 16 GB, but the laptop RTX 5090 has 24 GB against the desktop card's 32 GB.

Microsoft publishes three levels for each sim: Minimum, Recommended and Ideal. Each laptop's spec check below compares its graphics memory and RAM with the MSFS 2024 levels. The chips Microsoft names are desktop parts, so we don't compare a laptop's graphics chip or processor with them: the same chip name runs at lower power in a laptop.

Microsoft's minimum pairs the GTX 970 with the much faster RX 5700, so treat the GTX 970 as the real floor. MSFS 2024 streams most of its world, which is why it installs small; plan for far more space once you add planes, airports and a bigger cache. Microsoft names desktop chips: a laptop version of a chip runs at lower power, so use the list as a guide to memory and class, not a like-for-like match.

Which laptop for your screen, an external monitor or VR?

Our bars are guidelines, built from published MSFS 2024 tests and Microsoft's spec, and they decide the "Best for" line on every laptop:

  • 1080p screens: every laptop here. The RTX 5050, 5060 and 5070 laptops have 8 GB of graphics memory, which is enough at this resolution.
  • 1440p and ultrawide screens, and Quest-class VR: the RTX 5070 Ti laptops and up, with 12 GB of graphics memory. For VR we also ask for 32 GB of RAM.
  • 4K screens, three screens and high-resolution VR headsets: the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 laptops, with 16 GB or more.

Why the same graphics chip varies from laptop to laptop

A laptop maker chooses how many watts the graphics chip may draw, and the cooling has to match. Among the laptops here, the listings that state it range from 115 W (the TUF F16 with an RTX 5050) to 175 W (the AORUS Master 16 with an RTX 5080 and the SCAR 18 with an RTX 5090). Most listings don't say, so two laptops with the same chip name can differ.

That is why we rate the chip, not the name on the box, and why a thicker laptop often beats a thinner one with the same chip. It is also why the lightest laptop here is not the fastest.

RAM and storage to buy up front

Check three things in the listing before you buy:

  • Can the RAM be upgraded? One laptop here lists two memory slots, one has its memory soldered to the board, and for the rest the listing doesn't say. Soldered memory can't grow, so buy the amount you need.
  • How big is the drive? MSFS 2020 alone needs 150 GB, and add-ons and the rolling scenery cache keep growing. Most laptops here ship with a 1 TB drive; some have a free second M.2 slot. Our storage guide works out how much space your setup needs.
  • What ports does it have? Flight controls plug in by USB, so count the ports before you add a yoke, pedals, a throttle and a headset; a powered USB hub covers a shortfall.

Does a laptop work with flight controls and a cockpit?

Yes. A yoke, stick, rudder pedals or throttle quadrant plugs into a laptop the same way as into a desktop, usually by USB, and MSFS 2024 sees it as a controller. Why every laptop here uses an NVIDIA graphics chip

Every laptop here uses an NVIDIA chip, and for MSFS 2024 that suits the sim. Sim Update 6 (August 2026) made DLSS 4.5 the sim's default upscaler on GeForce chips and added frame generation that adjusts to the scene; RTX 50-series chips get the most out of it. AMD's newer FSR 4 was pulled from that update before release, so Radeon graphics stay on FSR 3 for now.

Should you wait for new hardware?

Probably not. Forecasts don't see the memory shortage that has pushed up the price of RAM, drives and graphics hardware easing soon, and NVIDIA's RTX 50 Super refresh has been put on hold because of it. The one date worth waiting for is a sale: Black Friday (November 27, 2026) and Cyber Monday are usually the year's biggest laptop sales, and Amazon's deals show up on the same listings, so the Check price buttons will show them.

Coming from MSFS 2020, an Xbox or a PS5?

From MSFS 2020 on a PC: MSFS 2024 is harder on hardware. Microsoft's ideal spec went from 32 GB to 64 GB of RAM and from 8 GB to 12 GB of graphics memory. If your current laptop has 8 GB of graphics memory and 16 GB of RAM, that's where MSFS 2024 will hurt first. Your MSFS 2020 add-ons mostly carry over.

From an Xbox: if you bought MSFS 2024 on Xbox, Xbox Play Anywhere gives you the PC version at no extra cost, and it's included with PC Game Pass.

From a PS5: the PS5 version is bought through PlayStation and isn't tied to an Xbox account, so it doesn't carry over; plan to buy MSFS 2024 again for your laptop.

The spec check compares each laptop's graphics memory and RAM with the levels Microsoft lists for MSFS 2024. Laptop chips aren't compared with Microsoft's desktop parts: the same chip name runs at lower power in a laptop, and a thin laptop can be slower than a thick one with the same chip.
