ASUS ROG RTX 5080 16GB vs XFX Speedster RX 7700 XT 12GB for X-Plane 12: 13.8-point gap, clear winner.
The RTX 5080 scores 53.35/100 against the RX 7700 XT's 39.6/100 on our model-derived scale, a gap wide enough to separate smooth VR from borderline unplayable in X-Plane 12's most demanding scenarios. The RTX 5080 maintains stable frame times during VR city flyovers over photogrammetry-heavy zones like KLAX or EGLL with Orbx London loaded, where the 16GB GDDR7 framebuffer prevents the stutters that plague tighter VRAM cards. The RX 7700 XT holds its own on flat-screen VFR cross-country legs with moderate scenery density, where its 12GB GDDR6 is sufficient and its budget-tier positioning makes it a viable entry point for pilots not yet running VR or high-end addon scenery.
Choose ASUS ROG Strix RTX 5080 OC if…
Choose ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 5080 16GB GDDR7 OC Gaming Graphics Card if you fly VR sessions through dense photogrammetry airports or run high-traffic online multiplayer on VATSIM with maxed X-Plane 12 rendering settings.
Choose XFX RX 7700 XT SWFT309 if…
Choose XFX Speedster SWFT309 AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Core Gaming Graphics Card with 12GB GDDR6 if you fly flat-screen X-Plane 12 on default or light addon scenery and want a budget-tier GPU that handles routine VFR cross-country legs without overspending.
Our take
The RTX 5080 leads by 13.8 points on our model-derived scale and is the clear choice for most X-Plane 12 pilots — buy it unless you are strictly budget-constrained and flying flat-screen with minimal addon scenery.
